WHO ARE LUTHERANS?

  • Part of the larger Christian family
  • The largest Protestant church in the world
  • Founder Martin Luther began the Reformation of the Western Church in 1517
  • Lutherans were the first to be called "Protestants" (1529)

    IN COMMON WITH OTHER CHRISTIANS,

  • Lutherans believe there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God of us all
  • We affirm the three early ecumenical creeds of the Church
  • We have a rich tradition of worship and praise
  • We care for the needs of people
  • We have a fervent expectation that God’s rule of justice and compassion, now among us in part, will one day find its completion

WHAT MAKES LUTHERANS UNIQUE?

  • Lutherans emphasize that God has restored our relationship to him by God’s free gift, through Christ—and we accept this good news in trust and faith
  • We acknowledge that Scripture alone is the authority for faith and life
  • Good works and ethical action are the fruit of our new relationship to God
  • We value historic expressions of worship—some of which go back to Jesus himself—while we seek to keep our worship fresh and relevant for today
  • We believe that as a Reformation church we have a special obligation to cooperate with other Christians to seek the unity of the family of God
